At 6 p.m. on Nov. 8, hundreds of local residents will commemorate the 74th anniversary of "Kristallnacht," or the Night of Broken Glass, which was considered to be a major turning point in Hitler's campaign to annihilate Jewish people in the early days of World War II.Sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, participants will gather at the Holocaust Memorial at1933-1945 Meridian Ave. in Miami Beach for a program of inspirational addresses, poetry readings and musical performances. Speakers willinclude an eyewitness to "Kristallnacht," as well as Andrew C. Hall, Esq., the first child survivor of the Holocaust to serve as chairmanof the Holocaust Memorial.
On the fateful nights of Nov. 9 and 10, 1938, the streets of Germany and parts of Austria were covered with broken glass from theshattered windows of Jewish-owned buildings, stores and synagogues that were vandalized and looted during the series of coordinatedattacks. "Kristallnacht" caused the deaths of 91 Jews and the incarceration of 30,000 in concentration camps.In the years since the end of World War II, Miami's Jewish community has joined with others around the world to host annual "Kristallnacht"commemorations that pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and ask program participants to speak out against hatred, bigotry andviolence.The program is also presented in cooperation with the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami, the Jewish Community Relations Councilof the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the Consulate General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico. ‘Healing Power of Gratitude’
A lecture entitled "The Healing Power of Gratitude," will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 at Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, 1600NW 54th St. The lecturer is Betty O'Neal, a practitioner of Christian Science healing.The lecture will give insights on how gratitude brings healing, blessings and a better life, and how the spiritual laws of God anduniversal good can be applied to any situation.O'Neal received a master's in education from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. She is formerly a human re source professional, and wasalso an on-air host for a local Boston television program.
A resident of Lynn, Mass., she is a full-time prayer-based healer using the Christian Science system of healing. She also is a member ofthe Christian Science Board of Lectureship and has served as a mentor and coach for unemployed and under-privileged women.The lecture is free and open to the public.
Annual Catholic Catechetical Conference
Archbishop Thomas Wenski will celebrate Mass at the annual Catechetical Conference, entitled "Agents of the New Evangelization,"on Nov. 3, at Archbishop McCarthy High School at 5451 S.
